History of OxyContin

In 1995 a Connecticut pharmaceutical company, Purdue Pharma introduced OxyContin. Oxycodone is the same active ingredient in the drug OxyContin. Oxycodone has been around for over six decades prior to the release of OxyContin.
Years before the introduction of OxyContin, pain killers have been used to relieve the pain from people with severe pain from surgery or cancer. Doctors prescribed their patients to have the pain killers in their bloodstream consistanty to relieve the pain. This is where the problem arises. The problem is that the major pain killers like morphine and vicodin only worked to relieve pain for 2-3 hours. So, in order for individuals to keep the pain off they must take a large amount to keep the pain killer in their blood. Oncer OxyContin was introduced it removed this problem from the equation by delivering its active ingredients over a 12 hour period.
